Standing tall and erect with horizontal table-like branches the deodar or cedar is the state tree of Himachal Pradesh. They may attain a height of over 115 ft and a diameter of 42.65 ft has been recorded. The majestic deodar is a highly sacred tree of the hills.
It takes its origin from two separate words, deo means god and daru meaning tree and is considered to be the tree of the gods. It is known to be most sacred to Lord Shiva and can be found in excellent state of preservation as sacred groves near temples dedicated to him.
