Located at the head of the Hulikal ravine at an altitude of 6,070 ft above sea level ,Coonoor has been home to tea planters long before it became a holiday home for the rest of India.Coonoor is also a bird watcher’ paradise with the region boasting of species like cormorant,pipit,thrush,parakeet,skylark and the Nilgiri verditer.
Old colonial house and beautiful streets are part of this little town. The best thing is to take long walks either on the quiet streets or in the tea gardens. For the adventurous there are numerous trekking and hiking trails in and around Coonoor.
Take a ride on the heritage toy train that runs on a narrow gauge. The train starts at Mettupalayam and travels all the way to Ooty chugging through the distance at a maximum speed of 30 km per hour covering 46km in 5 hours. The trip provides for some breathtaking views of forests, hills, tea estates and plains as the travellers are taken from the heights of 1,069 ft to 7,228 ft.There are 16 tunnels and several tall girder bridges. Today the Nilgiri Passenger as it is known has been granted World Heritage State by the UNESCO.
