For centuries Mount Abu has been to royalty in Rajasthan what Shimla had been to the British and is a summer retreat even today of the state Governor. There is hardly any snowfall except for the thin layer of ice that freezes over the Naqqi Lake and over the southern reaches of Aravalli range. Located at an altitude of 1239 m Mount Abu is a major attraction during the summer. Coniferous trees and flowering plants give it a green cover that shelters several wildlife species like the sloth Bear.Naqqi Lake set amid picturesque surroundings offer boating. Other major attractions are the rocks around the lake shaped like a toad and the mount of Shiva, the bull Nandi. It is the only artificial lake located more than 1200 m above sea level in India.Gaumukh temple located in the valley has a natural spring shaped like a cow’s head and is the place where the famous yagna was performed to purify the Rajputs and create four major clans. The Dilwara Jain temples with their richly carved marble interiors are a wonderful example of craftsmanship and temple architecture from the 11th to 13th centuries.
