Established by the French in 1674, Pondicherry has tiled roofs, wooden shutters, small balconies and colonnades and well-planned streets with Catholic churches at every corner. The town also has a cosmopolitan feel with people from different walks of life settling here in search of quiet and peaceful life. It has a long tradition of being city of peace with philosopher-poet Sri Aurobindo setting up his ashram in 1926.Influenced by the art of yoga, his writing gained numerous followers. A township Auroville was established 8 km from Pondicherry. The most striking monument in Auroville is the Matri Mandir.Apart from the Auroville ashram one can also visit the Pondicherry Museum or the Aurodhan Gallery. One can take refreshing stroll on the beach.
