Sonamarg The name of Sonmarg translates as golden meadow and stems from the yellow crocus blooms that carpet the Kashmir valley in the spring season.Sonamarg is situated on the strategic Srinagar-Leh highway between Thajwas glacier and the Sindh River that emerges from the foothills of Kolahoi Mountain.Sonamarg marks the transition from coniferous forests to the cold,desert region of Ladakh across Zojilla mountain pass. The waters of Sindh contain trout which offer fantastic opportunities to those love angling. The resort town is famous for its rock climbing sites and alpine skiing. The Amarnath pilgrimage also brings hundreds of thousands of yatris to Sonamarg every year.Sonamarg functions as the base camp for a second pilgrimage route via Baltal to Amarnath.The tracks from Sonamarg to Gangabal Lake offers hiking amid Greenery.The Lake is held sacred by Kashmiri Pandits for sanctuaries.
